Connor: I
gave him false hope.
Dr. Rush:
You gave him hope.
Connor:
What good does that do him now?
Dr. Rush:
Did you do everything you could medically? You know you did. You know you gave
him the only reasonable course of treatment.
Connor:
And still…
Dr. Rush:
Still, you didn't get a miracle. And that's what it would have taken: a
miracle. What happened isn't your fault.
Connor:
Don't you think I know that?
Dr. Rush: Intellectually? I'm sure you know it. In
your mind. But it's not your mind that's in pain, is it?
Connor: He trusted me.
Dr. Rush: And he was right to trust you. You cared
about him as a person, and you used all the skill you had as a doctor.
Connor: You know what I mean. He thought I could
save him. That he'd come out of the O.R. alive.
Dr. Rush: Is that so bad, that he thought that?
Connor: I just don't know.
Dr. Rush: He might have made it through, right?
Connor: There was a slim chance. A very slim chance.
Dr. Rush: You gave him that chance. You put it before
his eyes, and let him go in with hope. You couldn't do any better than that.
Connor: I want to believe that.
Dr. Rush: You will. Maybe not today, maybe not for a
long time. But you will.
